Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Fathers of the Constitution (Spanish: Padres de la Constitución) were seven important leaders in Spain. They worked together to write the Spanish Constitution of 1978. A constitution is like a rulebook for a country. It explains how the government works and what rights people have.

These seven leaders came from different political groups. This was important because they needed to agree on rules for all of Spain.

  • Gabriel Cisneros (1940–2007)
  • Miguel Herrero y Rodríguez de Miñón (born 1940)
  • José Pedro Pérez Llorca (1940–2019)

These three leaders were from the Union of the Democratic Centre. This was a group that held views in the middle, leaning a bit to the right.

  • Manuel Fraga Iribarne (1922–2012)

He represented the People's Alliance, which was a group with more traditional, right-wing ideas.

  • Gregorio Peces-Barba (1938–2012)

He was from the Spanish Socialist Worker's Party. This group had left-wing ideas, focusing on social fairness and workers' rights.

  • Jordi Solé Tura (1930–2009)

He belonged to the Unified Socialist Party of Catalonia and the Communist Party of Spain. These groups had ideas about equality and shared resources.

  • Miquel Roca Junyent (born 1940)

He was from the Democratic Pact for Catalonia. He represented people who wanted more self-rule for the region of Catalonia.

These seven people worked hard to create a constitution that would bring Spain together after a long period of dictatorship. Their work helped Spain become a modern democracy.
