Fatimata M'baye (born 1957) is a lawyer from Mauritania. She works hard to protect human rights in her country. In 2016, she received a special award. It was called the International Women of Courage Award. The U.S. Secretary of State gave her this award.

Early Life and Education
Fatimata M'baye was born in Mauritania in 1957. When she was 12, she faced challenges with an early marriage. But she bravely fought her family to go to school.
From 1981 to 1985, she studied law and economics. She went to the University of Nouakchott. She became the first female lawyer in Mauritania.
Working for Human Rights
Founding the AMDH
In 1991, Fatimata M'baye helped start an important group. It was called the Mauritanian Human Rights Association, or AMDH. She became the president of this group in 2006.
In 1998, a TV report showed that slavery was still happening in Mauritania. After this, Fatimata M'baye and the group's president, Cheikh Saad Bouh Kamara, faced difficulties. She was held for being part of an unapproved group. She was given a sentence and a large fine.
Other Important Roles
M'baye is also in charge of the Committee for Women's Rights. She started and leads the Social Commission of the AMDH. She gives advice as a lawyer to many organizations. In 1997, she watched the presidential elections in Mauritania.
Her work against unfair treatment and slavery in Mauritania led to her being held in 1987. In 1998, she faced another period of being held. This was for being part of an unapproved group. But because of help from around the world, the country's President pardoned her.
International Work
In 2013, M'baye joined a special team for the United Nations. This team had three people. They looked into problems in the Central African Republic. The team worked in a difficult and dangerous place. In 2015, they shared a report with the Security Council. The report said that all sides in the CAR Civil War had done very serious wrongs.
Awards and Recognition
Fatimata M'baye has received many awards for her brave work.
In 1999, she got the Nuremberg International Human Rights Award. This was for her fight against slavery and unfair treatment in Mauritania.
In 2012, Hillary Clinton honored M'baye. She called her a Hero in the Trafficking in Persons Report.
Family Life
Fatimata M'baye has three children. Their names are Oumaima Salamata Toure, Cheikh Abdallahi Cherif, and Osmane Cherif Toure.
