Fayette City is a small town, called a borough, in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, USA. In 2020, about 502 people lived there. Kids in Fayette City go to schools in the Belle Vernon Area School District. Some of the buildings in town are very old, built even before 1820!
The current mayor of Fayette City is Herbert Vargo Jr. He has been the mayor since 1993.

History of Fayette City
Fayette City has a long history! It was first started in 1794 by a person named Colonel Edward Cook. Back then, it was called Freeport. Later, in 1825, its name changed to Cookstown to honor Colonel Cook. Finally, in 1854, the town was named Fayette City. This new name honored the Marquis de Lafayette, a famous French general who helped America during the Revolutionary War.
In 1895, a train line called the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad reached Fayette City. For many years, from 1820 to 1962, a ferry boat helped people cross the river between Fayette City and Allenport.
Coal Mining in Fayette City
Fayette City has a strong connection to coal mining, which started around 1830. Many people from countries like Italy, Poland, Austria-Hungary, and Rusyns came to live in Fayette City and work in the coal mines.

Fayette City was the location of a serious mining accident at the Naomi Mine on December 7, 1907. Sadly, all the miners who died were immigrants from Eastern Europe. Another explosion happened at the Apollo Mine in January 1926. By 1920, many of the mines around Fayette City began to close down.

Geography of Fayette City
Fayette City is located in the northwestern part of Fayette County. It sits right on the east bank of the Monongahela River. This river also forms the border with Washington County. The town of Allenport is just across the river.
The main road through Fayette City is Pennsylvania Route 201. It is known as Main Street for northbound traffic and Second Street for southbound traffic. Uniontown, which is the main city in Fayette County, is about 17 miles southeast of Fayette City.
Fayette City is a low-lying area right next to the Monongahela River. This means it can sometimes experience flooding when there are very heavy rains. Two small streams, Lamb Lick Run and Downers Run, flow into the Monongahela River within the town's boundaries.
