About the Fayette County School System
A school district is like a local government for schools. It makes sure that all public schools in an area run smoothly. The Fayette County School System provides education from pre-school all the way through 12th grade. It has many teachers and staff who help over 20,000 students learn and grow.
How the School Board Works
The people who live in Fayette County elect a group of five people called the school board. This board makes important decisions about the schools. They set the rules and policies for the district. They also hire a superintendent, who is like the main boss of all the schools.
Making Voting Fair
For a long time, the school board members were elected in a way called "at-large." This meant everyone in the county voted for all five board members. However, some people felt this system wasn't fair. They believed it made it hard for minority groups, like African Americans who make up about 20% of the county, to elect someone they chose to the board.
In 2013, a group called the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund filed a lawsuit. They argued that the "at-large" system was unfair and went against a law called the Voting Rights Act of 1965. This law helps make sure everyone's vote counts fairly.
A federal court agreed with the lawsuit. On May 22, 2013, the court ordered Fayette County to change its voting system. Instead of "at-large," they had to switch to "single-member districts." This means the county was divided into smaller areas, and people in each area vote for just one board member from their district. This change helps make sure that different communities have a better chance to elect someone who represents them on the school board.
