Federal is a small community in Central Alberta, Canada. It is known as a hamlet, which is a type of small settlement without its own local government. Federal is part of the County of Paintearth No. 18.
Where is Federal?
Federal is located in the middle of Alberta. It is about 8 kilometers (5 miles) west of a town called Coronation. It is also about 26 kilometers (16 miles) east of another town, Castor.
Federal used to be a village. A village is usually a bit bigger than a hamlet and has its own local council. Now, Federal is managed by the County of Paintearth No. 18 council.
How Federal Got Its Name
The name "Federal" has an interesting history! In 1911, a big event happened: the Coronation of George V and Mary. This was when King George V and Queen Mary were officially crowned in the United Kingdom.
After this event, many places along the Canadian National Railway line were given names that celebrated the British monarchy and patriotism. These names included:
- Coronation (named after the crowning event itself)
- Veteran
- Consort
- Throne
- Loyalist
- And, of course, Federal!
These names were chosen to show loyalty and pride in the British Empire at that time.
