Federalsburg is a small place in Sussex County, Delaware, United States. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it is a group of homes and businesses that is not officially a town or city with its own local government.

Federalsburg is also called Fleatown. It is located where Old State Road and Fleatown Road meet. This spot is just north of another community called Ellendale.

History of Federalsburg

Early Days as Fleatown

This area was first known as Fleatown. Around the year 1740, a famous building called the Fleatown Inn was built here. This inn was a popular stop for many years. However, it was taken down in April 1895.

Taverns and Travelers

Fleatown had two taverns along the Old State Road. Taverns were like inns or hotels where travelers could rest and eat. These taverns served people traveling by stagecoach. Stagecoaches were like public buses pulled by horses. They carried people and mail between towns. The road connected Milford to Georgetown.

The Railroad's Impact

The taverns in Fleatown eventually closed. The community became less busy. This happened after a new train station was built in Ellendale. The Junction and Breakwater Railroad depot opened in Ellendale in 1866. When the railroad came, fewer people used the old stagecoach roads. This caused Fleatown to become a quieter place.
