Federico González Suárez (1844–1917) was an important figure in Ecuador. He was a priest, a historian, and a politician. He served as the Archbishop of Quito for twelve years. Before becoming the Archbishop, he was a senator in the Ecuadorian government in 1894. Later, he became the Bishop of Ibarra from 1895 to 1905.
A Leader in Ecuador
Federico González Suárez was well-known for standing up against the ideas of Eloy Alfaro. Alfaro was a powerful leader who wanted to make Ecuadorian society less connected to the Church. This was called "anticlerical" because it was against the influence of the clergy (church leaders).
A Peacemaker in Tough Times
Even though he disagreed with some political leaders, González Suárez was a calm and fair person. He was known as a peacemaker during a very difficult time in Ecuador's history. His actions helped keep the country stable.
One important moment was in 1900. There was a group of people called Conservatives gathering in Colombia, planning to start a fight. This could have led to more civil war. González Suárez publicly spoke out against them. His statement helped end five years of civil war. It also gave more official support to Alfaro's government.
A Great Historian
González Suárez also wrote many books about the history of Ecuador. His most famous book is Historia General de la República del Ecuador. This book is considered a masterpiece. People admire it for being fair, well-researched, and very smart.
His Legacy
Because of his careful studies, his smart political moves, and his strong faith, Federico González Suárez is remembered as one of Ecuador's most important people. He was a leader in history, politics, and the Church.
The González Suárez neighborhood in the city of Quito is named after him.
