Feldmark Grass: A Tiny Survivor

What Does Feldmark Grass Look Like?

Feldmark grass is a very small plant that grows in clumps. It's a type of "bunchgrass." Its leaves are usually only about 3 centimeters (about 1.2 inches) tall. The stems that hold its flowers can grow a bit taller, up to about 7 centimeters (about 2.8 inches).

The leaves of this grass have wide, thin coverings at their base. These coverings often look curved or twisted like a spiral. The plant produces small clusters of flowers called spikelets. Each spikelet usually has two to four tiny flowers inside it. These spikelets grow close to the main flowering stem.

Where Does Feldmark Grass Live?

In Australia, feldmark grass is quite rare. It only grows in a very small area, about 3 hectares (about 7.4 acres), in the Main Range of Kosciuszko National Park. This area is located between Mount Lee and Mount Northcote.

This grass also grows in the high, cold mountain areas of New Zealand. It only lives in special places called feldmark communities. These places have very harsh weather. They often experience freezing temperatures and strong, cold winds.

Why Is Feldmark Grass Special?

Feldmark grass is considered a Vulnerable plant in Australia. This means it needs protection. It is listed under Australia's Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. Being "Vulnerable" means that this plant could become endangered if we don't protect its habitat and make sure it can grow safely.
