José Feliciano de Jesús Ama Trampa (born 1881 – died January 28, 1932) was an important leader for the native people of El Salvador. He was a member of the Pipil group from a town called Izalco. Feliciano Ama played a key role in a big event known as La Matanza, where he sadly lost his life.
Who Was Feliciano Ama?
Feliciano Ama was a native leader who stood up for his community. He lived in a time when many native people in El Salvador were losing their land. Wealthy families, especially those who grew coffee, were taking over land that had belonged to native communities for a long time.
Ama himself experienced this unfairness. A rich coffee-growing family, the Regalados, took his land. He was treated very badly during this time. This happened because of new rules that allowed private landowners to take over land that native people had shared and used together.
His Life and Family
Feliciano Ama worked as a day laborer in Izalco, meaning he was paid for each day he worked. He married Josefa Shupan, who came from a respected Pipil family in Izalco.
In 1917, he joined a Catholic group called the Cofradía del Corpus Christi. This group was like a special club or brotherhood for Pipil people. His father-in-law, Patricio Shupan, was the mayordomo (leader) of this brotherhood. After Patricio Shupan passed away in 1917, Feliciano Ama became the new head of the group.
Leading the Uprising
In the early morning of January 22, 1932, Feliciano Ama led the Pipil farmers of Izalco in an uprising. They were protesting against the landlords who had taken their land and treated them unfairly.
With hundreds of supporters, he marched towards the main city of the Sonsonate region. During this time, there was violence, and the mayor of the city died. Even though others were involved, some landlords blamed Ama. He had to flee into the hills near Izalco to hide.
However, soldiers from Izalco, led by Commander Cabrera, found him. Feliciano Ama was captured and sadly executed in the center of Izalco. He is remembered as a brave leader who fought for the rights of his people.
