Discovering Felicity Charlton: A British Artist
Early Life and Training
Felicity Charlton was born in the Clifton area of Bristol, England, in 1913. She loved art from a young age. To follow her passion, she attended the West of England College of Art in Bristol.
At the college, Felicity met another artist named Evan Charlton. He was teaching art there, and they later got married.
Her Artistic Journey
In 1938, Felicity Charlton moved to Wales. During World War II, she worked as a farm labourer. After the war ended, she returned to her art career. She started showing her paintings in many group exhibitions.
Some of her early shows included:
- Twenty-Five Paintings by Contemporary Welsh Artists in 1949, organized by the Welsh Arts Council.
- The Festival Exhibition of Contemporary Welsh Painting in 1951.
- The Artist in Wales exhibition, which toured in 1952 and was held at the National Library of Wales.
Later, Felicity Charlton had her own solo art shows. These took place in Abergavenny (1973), Bath (1989 and 1991), and Newport Museum and Art Gallery (1993). The Newport show was a special "retrospective" exhibition, which means it looked back at her art from over many years. She also exhibited with the South Wales Group and at the National Eisteddfod of Wales, a big cultural festival.
Felicity's husband, Evan Charlton, was also a well-known artist. He worked as an art lecturer in Cardiff, Wales. They often had art shows together. One important joint exhibition was called Evan and Felicity Charlton: Paintings 1937-86. This major show was held at the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol.
Where to See Her Art

Remembering Her Legacy
Felicity Charlton passed away on March 18, 2009. To honor her and her husband's contributions to art, Cardiff Metropolitan University gives out an annual award. It's called the Evan and Felicity Charlton Travel Award, and it helps young artists.
