About Felipe Alfau Mendoza
Felipe Alfau Mendoza was born in Santo Domingo, which is now the capital of the Dominican Republic. His father was Felipe Alfau y Bustamante and his mother was Rosa Josefa Mendoza Pineda.
He joined the Spanish Army and became a strong leader. He led the first group of Jägers (a type of light infantry soldiers) in Melilla, a Spanish city in North Africa. In 1910, he was promoted to a high rank: division general.
His Role in Morocco
In 1912, a very important agreement called the Treaty of Fes was signed. This treaty created the Spanish protectorate in Morocco. A "protectorate" meant that Spain would protect and partly control a part of Morocco.
Felipe Alfau Mendoza led Spanish forces into the city of Tétouan in Morocco on February 19, 1913. Because of his leadership, he was chosen to be the first High Commissioner of this new Spanish protectorate. He started this big job on April 5, 1913. However, he only stayed in this role for a short time. He left on August 15, 1913, and another general, José Marina Vega, took over.
Leading in Catalonia
After his time in Morocco, Felipe Alfau Mendoza was given another major leadership position. In 1915, he became the Captain General of Catalonia. This meant he was the top military commander in the Catalonia region of Spain.
He held this position until May 27, 1916. He was replaced by General Marina again. Felipe Alfau Mendoza passed away in Casablanca, Morocco, in 1937.
