Early Life and Military Career
José Marina Vega was born on April 13, 1850, in Figueres, Spain. Some records say he was born in 1848. This is because his father, who was a captain in the Spanish army, said José was two years older when he applied for the military.
As a child, José moved to Luzon in the Philippines. He later returned to Peninsular Spain. In 1863, at the age of 13, he joined the Battalion of Hunters Llerena as a cadet. This was the start of his long military career.
Rising Through the Ranks
José Marina Vega fought in the Third Carlist War, a civil war in Spain. He was part of the infantry, which are soldiers who fight on foot.
He was promoted to colonel in 1893. During his career, he was stationed in places like the Philippines and Cuba. In 1896, he became a brigadier general. By July 1900, he was promoted to Divisional general.
After a short time as a civil governor in Barcelona in 1899, he was sent to Melilla in 1905. Melilla is a Spanish city located in North Africa.
Leadership in Melilla

As the military leader in Melilla, José Marina Vega commanded important operations. These operations took place in the area around Melilla. They were a response to attacks by Riffian tribesmen during what was called the Melilla War.
One difficult event during this time was the "Disaster of the Barranco del Lobo" in July 1909. This battle happened at the same time as the Tragic Week riots in Barcelona. These events caused a lot of concern among the Spanish public. After these events, José Marina Vega was promoted to Lieutenant general.
Political Roles
In 1913, José Marina Vega was appointed as the High Commissioner of Spain in Morocco. He took over from Felipe Alfau Mendoza. He held this important position until 1915.
He also served as the Minister of War two times. The first time was in 1917, and the second time was in 1918. He served in governments led by Eduardo Dato and Antonio Maura.
In 1919, he was appointed as a senator for life. This meant he would serve in the Senate of Spain for the rest of his life. José Marina Vega passed away on January 30, 1926, in Madrid.
