Fenor Bog is a very special natural area in County Waterford, Ireland. It's a type of wetland called an fen, which is like a marshy area. This bog is about 32 acres (0.13 km2) big. It's the first place in County Waterford to be named a national nature reserve. This means it's a protected area where nature can thrive. Fenor Bog is also the only alkaline fen left in the southeast of Ireland.

Fenor Bog became a national nature reserve in 2004. The Irish government officially protected it. This was a big step for conservation in County Waterford. It was the very first nature reserve in the county.

Why Fenor Bog is Protected

Before it was protected, groups worked hard to save Fenor Bog. The Irish Peatland Conservation Council (IPCC) and the Moin Fhionnurach Development Association (MFDA) bought the bog in 1999. They wanted to stop it from being damaged. Money for this was raised by groups like the Friends of the Bog. Fens are among the most endangered wetlands in Ireland. Protecting Fenor Bog helps save this rare habitat.

Where is Fenor Bog Located?

Fenor Bog is close to the village of Fenor. It is also part of the Copper Coast Geopark. This geopark is a special area known for its unique geology. The bog itself is an alkaline fen. This means its water is not acidic, which is different from many other bogs. It sits in a low area with Ballyscanlon Hill nearby.

Animals and Plants of Fenor Bog

Fenor Bog is home to many different living things. Over 200 types of mammals, birds, insects, and plants have been found here. It has wet woodlands with willow and alder trees. You can also find areas filled with sedges. There are also flat, wet meadows with many wild flowers.
