Ferlach (Slovene: Borovlje) is a town in Carinthia, Austria. It is the southernmost town in the country. Ferlach is famous for its very old tradition of making guns, which has been recognized as an important part of Austrian culture since 2010.

About Ferlach's Location

Ferlach is located in the beautiful Rosental/Rož Valley. This valley is near the Drava River. The town is about 17 kilometres (11 mi) south of Klagenfurt, which is the capital city of Carinthia.

To the south of Ferlach, you'll find the Karawanks mountain range. These mountains form the border between Austria and Slovenia. The town includes several smaller areas called cadastral communities.

Getting Around Ferlach

The town center of Ferlach is where two important roads meet. These are the Rosental Straße (B85) and the Loiblpass Straße (B91). The Loiblpass Straße is part of a larger European road, E652. It connects Klagenfurt in Austria to Tržič in Slovenia, going over the Loibl Pass.

There used to be a railway line from Ferlach to Weizelsdorf. It stopped regular service in 1951. However, on some summer weekends and for special events, you can still ride a historic steam train. This train, called the Rosentaler Dampfzug, is run by a group that loves old trains.

Ferlach's History

Ferlach was first mentioned in official papers in 1246. Its name, Vörelach, comes from the pine forests (Föhre in German, bor in Slovene) that surround it. This mountainous area has a lot of iron ore. People have been working with iron and making things from it since the 1400s.

Gun Making in Ferlach

Around 1518, the capital of the Duchy of Carinthia moved to nearby Klagenfurt. This change helped Ferlach grow into a major center for making firearms. During the time of Empress Maria Theresa, gun makers in Ferlach became the main suppliers of weapons for the Habsburg monarchy. Ferlach guns were also used by armies from Spain, France, and the Ottoman Empire.

The modern town of Ferlach was officially created in 1850. It was given "town privileges" in 1930. Today, Ferlach is still known for making high-quality hunting rifles. The town's history is shown on its coat of arms. It features a pine tree with a cone, two crossed silver nails, and a rifle.

People of Ferlach

In 2011, Ferlach had 7,272 people living there. About 8.0% of the people are Carinthian Slovenes, who are a Slovenian-speaking minority group.
