Fermín Abella y Blave (1832–1888) was an important Spanish jurist, which means a legal expert. He was also a writer, editor, and worked for the government. He helped shape laws and how the government worked in Spain during his time.

Early Life and Education

Fermín Abella y Blave was born on July 7, 1832, in a town called Pedrola, in Zaragoza, Spain. His parents were Joaquín Abella y Pallarés and Francisca Blave Goser.

His father was a judge. Sadly, he was killed during the Carlist Wars because he served the queen. Because of this, Queen Isabella II gave young Fermín money every year starting in 1840 to help him as an orphan.

Fermín studied law at the University of Zaragoza. Even before he finished his degree, he was already teaching Roman law. He earned his law degree on August 28, 1854. In the same year, he joined the Bar Association in Zaragoza, becoming a professional lawyer.

Working for the Government

In 1856, Fermín Abella y Blave started working for the Spanish government. His first job was in Zaragoza, helping with public works related to water. He quickly realized that there wasn't a good place to find all the laws about water.

This led him to write his first book, Manual de Aguas y Riegos (Manual of Waters and Irrigation), published in 1861. This book helped both government workers and citizens understand the laws better.

He moved up in his career, known for being very good at his job. He became friends with Juan Cavero, who was the new Governor of Córdoba. This friendship helped Fermín become the Government Secretary for Córdoba in 1864.

He then worked in Huesca and later became a subgovernor for Reus and the island of Menorca. In 1867, he moved to Madrid to work for the provincial government. Soon after, he was promoted to a higher position in the central government's Overseas Ministry. He left his job when a big change in government, called the Glorious Revolution, happened in October 1868.

Author and Editor

After leaving his government job, Fermín Abella y Blave focused on writing and editing. He had already published several books on law and government.

In 1868, he became the editor of a very important journal called El Consultor de los Ayuntamientos y de los Juzgados Municipales. This journal helped local governments and courts. By 1869, he became the director and owner of the journal.

He also started and managed other magazines, like El Boletín de la Administración Local (The Local Administration Bulletin) and El Consultor de los Parrocos (The Parish Priests' Consultant) in 1872.

Working for the Royal Family

In 1875, when Alfonso XII became the new king of Spain, he appointed Fermín Abella y Blave to work for the Royal Household. Fermín became the Secretary of the Royal Household and Properties.

During this time, he sometimes filled in for the Royal Head Librarian and the General Intendant (manager) of the Royal Household. When the General Intendant retired in 1885, Fermín Abella y Blave was promoted to that top position. He stayed in this important role until he passed away in 1888.
