FernGully: The Last Rainforest is a 1992 animated musical fantasy film. It was directed by Bill Kroyer and written by Jim Cox. The movie is based on a book by Diana Young. It was made by Australian and American companies like Kroyer Films, Youngheart Productions, and 20th Century Fox.
The film features the voices of famous actors. These include Tim Curry, Samantha Mathis, Christian Slater, Jonathan Ward, Robin Williams, and Grace Zabriskie. FernGully takes place in an Australian rainforest. This forest is home to many fairies.
One of the main characters is a fairy named Crysta. She accidentally shrinks a young logger named Zak. He becomes as small as a fairy. Together, they must gather the fairies and animals. Their goal is to protect their home. They face loggers and a bad pollution spirit named Hexxus. The film's producer, Wayne Young, said the movie was "blatantly environmental." He wanted to show the importance of nature without being too preachy.
The movie received mostly good reviews. It also did well financially. It earned money at the box office and from home video sales. A sequel, FernGully 2: The Magical Rescue, came out in 1998. However, none of the original voice actors returned for it.
Story of FernGully
Crysta is a curious fairy who lives in FernGully. This is a beautiful picturesque rainforest. It is untouched by human pollution. Long ago, the fairies and humans lived together. But the fairies believe humans disappeared. They think a dark spirit named Hexxus drove them away.
Magi is a wise fairy. She is Crysta's teacher. Magi had trapped Hexxus inside a tree. One day, Crysta explores a new part of the forest. There, she meets Batty Koda. Batty is a bat. He says humans experimented on him. This made him a bit wild and confused.
Most fairies do not believe Batty. But Crysta does. She decides to investigate. She finds Zak, a young logger. Crysta tries to save him from a falling tree. She accidentally shrinks him to fairy size. She does not know how to make him big again.
Meanwhile, Zak's bosses, Tony and Ralph, cut down the tree. This tree was holding Hexxus prisoner. Hexxus quickly starts to get his powers back. He grows stronger by feeding on pollution. He tricks Tony and Ralph into driving their logging machine towards FernGully.
In FernGully, Zak meets Pips. Pips is a fairy who feels jealous of Zak. He sees how close Zak and Crysta are becoming. Zak starts to like Crysta. But he hides why the humans are really there.
Signs of Hexxus's return begin to appear. Trees get poisoned, and rivers become polluted. Zak finally admits that humans are destroying the forest. The fairies decide to fight back. They want to defend their homes. Zak realizes their fight might be hopeless. He convinces Batty to help him. They plan to stop the logging machine.
Zak shows himself to Tony and Ralph. At that moment, Hexxus takes over the machine. He starts to destroy the forest wildly. Magi sacrifices herself to help the fairies. She tells Crysta to remember all she has learned.
Zak manages to stop the machine. This cuts off Hexxus's power source. But Hexxus changes form. He becomes a fiery spirit within the machine's oil. He starts to set the forest on fire. Crysta bravely sacrifices herself. She lets Hexxus swallow her. All seems lost.
Then, Hexxus begins to sprout limbs and leaves. He starts to look like a tree. Batty, Pips, and the other fairies use their powers. This makes a seed grow wildly inside Hexxus. Crysta had given him this seed. Hexxus and the machine are trapped. They are imprisoned by the new tree. It grows right at the edge of FernGully. The tree then bursts into beautiful bloom.
Crysta reappears after the battle. She survived and becomes the new magical fairy. She gives Zak a seed. She asks him to remember everything that happened. Sadly, she returns him to his human size. Zak remembers the seed in his hand. He promises to remember his adventure. He buries the seed in the soil. He tells Tony and Ralph that things need to change. They then leave the forest. The seed grows new life for FernGully. Crysta playfully chases Pips, with Batty following them.
