Fernand Crommelynck (born November 19, 1886 – died March 17, 1970) was a Belgian writer who wrote plays. He is famous for his funny plays, called farces. In these plays, normal human weaknesses turn into huge, funny obsessions.

About Fernand Crommelynck

Fernand was born in Paris, France. His family was full of actors. His mother was French, and his father was Belgian. Fernand himself also became an actor.

His sons, Aldo, Piero, and Milan, became very skilled printmakers. They worked with famous artists like Pablo Picasso. This shows how artistic talent ran in their family!

Early Plays and Style

Even in his first plays, Fernand showed his unique writing style. He wrote plays like Nous n'irons plus au bois (1906) and Le sculpteur de masques (1908). His plays often started with a silly idea. Then, they would follow this idea to a very funny, but logical, end. A French composer named Cecile Paul Simon even set his play Le marchand de regrets to music.

Famous Works

Fernand Crommelynck's most famous play is Le Cocu magnifique (1920). It's a funny play about a lover's jealousy. The play was very popular. It used new and interesting stage designs by Vsevolod Meyerhold. Because of its success, Fernand was able to stop acting. He could then spend all his time writing plays.

In another play, Tripes d'or (1926), he made fun of people who love money too much. He showed how money can make people seem important, even if they are not. In Carine, ou la jeune fille folle de son âme (1929), he explored ideas about love and feelings. This play tells the story of a pure young girl who stays true to her ideas of love.

Fernand Crommelynck was a very original writer. His plays used beautiful language and new ways of telling stories. He was one of the most unique writers in 20th-century theatre.
