Fernand Goyvaerts (born October 24, 1938 – died April 5, 2004) was a talented Belgian footballer. He played as an attacker, which means he was usually trying to score goals.

Playing for Clubs

Fernand Goyvaerts started playing for the main team of Club Brugge when he was just 16 years old. In 1958, he scored a very important penalty kick against CS Verviers. This goal helped Club Brugge get promoted to the highest level of Belgian football.

In 1962, Fernand left Club Brugge after a disagreement with his coach. He then moved to Spain to play for FC Barcelona. Barcelona paid a large sum of money for him, about 5 million Belgian francs. After two years, he was even chosen as the best foreign player in the top Spanish league, called the Primera División.

A year later, Goyvaerts moved to Real Madrid, another very famous Spanish team. This made him the only Belgian player at that time to have played for both of these huge Spanish clubs. However, he had some injuries and could not play as much as he wanted. He later followed his coach, Alfredo Di Stéfano, to another Spanish team, Elche CF.

In 1971, Fernand Goyvaerts returned to Belgium. He had been playing for OGC Nice in France before coming back. He joined Cercle Brugge and later played for other Belgian teams like SC Lokeren, WS Lauwe, and RC Tournai.

Playing for Belgium

Even though Fernand Goyvaerts was one of the most skilled Belgian footballers of his time, he only played 8 games for the Belgian national team. They are often called the Red Devils. He scored one goal for his country in a game against the Netherlands.

At that time, professional footballers were not allowed to play for the national team. This rule meant that many talented players like Fernand could not represent their country as often as they might have.

Life After Football

After he stopped playing football, Fernand Goyvaerts worked as an agent for other players. This meant he helped players find new teams and manage their careers. Sadly, he passed away at the age of 65 from a brain bleed.
