Early Life and Family
Fernando Errázuriz was born in Santiago, the capital city of Chile. His parents were Francisco Javier de Errázuriz y Madariaga and María Rosa Aldunate y Guerrero Carrera. He studied hard and became a lawyer.
On October 2, 1801, he married María del Carmen Sotomayor Elzo. They had eight children together.
Role in Chilean Independence
Fernando Errázuriz was deeply involved in Chile's movement to become independent from Spain.
First Steps Towards Independence
In 1810, Chile took its first big step towards self-rule. This was called the First Government Junta. Fernando Errázuriz was a governor in this important meeting.
During a period known as the Patria Vieja (Old Homeland), he was chosen as a representative, called a deputy. He represented the city of Rancagua in the First National Congress of 1811.
Fighting for Freedom
Errázuriz took part in the actual War of Independence. This was a tough time. He faced difficulties and was even persecuted by the Spanish forces between 1814 and 1817.
He finally regained his freedom after the Chilean patriots won a major battle. This victory happened at Chacabuco on February 12, 1817.
Building the New Nation
After the victory, a new period began called the Patria Nueva (New Homeland). This lasted from February 12, 1817, to January 28, 1823. During this time, Fernando Errázuriz continued to serve as a deputy for Rancagua.
On January 28, 1823, a special meeting was held. Its purpose was to ask the Supreme Director, Bernardo O'Higgins, to step down from his leadership role. A new Government Junta was formed with Agustín de Eyzaguirre, Fernando Errázuriz, and José Miguel Infante.
Later, on December 12, 1823, Errázuriz was elected president of the Congress. This Congress was becoming a bicameral system, meaning it had two parts. He also served as a senator for Santiago and was appointed as a temporary supreme director on January 3, 1824. He was a senator for Santiago again from 1831 to 1834.
Provisional President of Chile
Fernando Errázuriz played a key role in the government. He was president of the Provincial Assembly of Santiago in 1826 and 1827. He was also appointed interim president of a special congress in March 1830.
On March 8, 1831, he became the provisional president of Chile. This happened because the previous president, José Tomás Ovalle, resigned and then passed away. Errázuriz held this important position until September 18 of the same year. After him, José Joaquín Prieto became president, following a presidential election.
