Volta a Catalunya (1997)

Fernando Escartín Coti (born on January 24, 1968) is a Spanish former road racing cyclist. He was a very strong climber. From 1995 to 2000, he finished in the top 10 of the famous Tour de France five times. During the same years, he also came in second place twice in another big race, the Vuelta a España.

About Fernando Escartín

Fernando Escartín was born in Biescas, a town in Aragon, Spain. He became a professional cyclist in 1990.

Tour de France Highlights

Escartín had a great career, especially in the Tour de France. In the 1999 Tour de France, he won one stage. This means he was the fastest rider on one specific day of the race. He also finished third overall in that same Tour. This was a huge achievement!

During the years when Lance Armstrong won the Tour de France (1999–2005), many cyclists faced problems with doping. Doping is when athletes use banned substances to improve their performance. However, Fernando Escartín was one of the few top riders from that time who was never found guilty of doping. He always kept a clean record.

When the Armstrong doping scandal came out, Escartín said that for him, the results from 1999 still stood. He didn't want to think about changing history. He was, however, linked to an investigation where some sports doctors were found to have written prescriptions for banned substances. But he was never found to have used them himself.

Life After Cycling

Fernando Escartín rode his last professional race on November 4, 2002. After that, he retired from professional cycling.

Since retiring, he has continued to be involved in the sport. He now works as a race co-designer for the Vuelta a España. This means he helps plan the routes and stages for this big cycling race.
