Fernando Fernández de Córdova's Early Life and Military Career
Fernando was born into a family with a strong military background. His father, José de Córdoba y Rojas, was also a military man. Fernando and his brother, Luis, both became soldiers. They fought together in the First Carlist War. In this war, they supported Queen Isabella II, who was known as an Isabelino.
Fernando was part of the Partido Moderado, which was a political group in Spain. This group believed in a more moderate way of governing the country.
Rising Through the Ranks
By 1847, Fernando had become a Lieutenant General. This is a very high rank in the army. He was also made the Captain General of Catalonia. This meant he was in charge of the military in that region of Spain. During the Second Carlist War, he successfully stopped small groups of rebels in Catalonia by early 1849.
Helping the Pope in Italy
In May 1849, Fernando was sent on an important mission to Italy. His job was to help protect Pope Pius IX. The Pope was facing challenges from the Italian Revolution of 1848. Fernando led a group of 4,000 Spanish soldiers. They went to Gaeta and were ready to help the Pope in any way needed.
This trip was a big deal because it was the first time the Spanish Army had sent soldiers to Italy in about 100 years. The Spanish soldiers helped secure the area. They also worked with French forces in their operations in a town called Itri.
Political Career and Prime Minister Role
Fernando Fernández de Córdova later became the War Minister. This role meant he was in charge of the country's military affairs. He even became the Prime Minister of Spain for one day! This happened on July 18, 1854, during a time of big political problems in Spain.
His very short time as Prime Minister ended quickly. Baldomero Espartero then took over. Espartero led a period known as the "progressive Biennium" from 1854 to 1856.
Changing Political Sides
Fernando had always been a strong supporter of Queen Isabella II of Spain. However, he later supported the Revolution of 1868. This revolution was against the Queen's rule. After this, he joined a new political group called the Radical Democratic Party.
In 1872, when Amadeo I of Spain was King, Fernando again served as acting Prime Minister. This was a very short time, from June 13 to June 16. After this, he decided to leave political life completely in 1873.
