José María Fernández de Córdoba y Rojas (also known as José de Córdoba) was an important Spanish military leader. He was born on April 6, 1774, in San Fernando, Cádiz, Spain. He died on December 15, 1810, in Potosí. José de Córdoba played a key role in the early parts of the Argentine War of Independence.
His father was José de Córdoba y Ramos, a vice admiral in the Spanish fleet. His father was defeated in the Battle of Cape St Vincent (1797). After this defeat, his father was removed from his military position.
José de Córdoba also joined the Spanish Navy. He fought against both the French and the English. For example, he was part of the Siege of Toulon. In 1801, he traveled to the Viceroyalty of the Río de la Plata as a frigate captain.
Early Military Career
José de Córdoba showed great skill in the Río de la Plata. He helped defend the region from the British invasions of the Río de la Plata. These invasions happened in 1806 and 1807. His actions during these attacks made him stand out as a brave leader.
Role in Independence Wars
In 1809, José de Córdoba joined the Army as a major general. He served under the command of Vicente Nieto. That same year, he was sent north to stop the Chuquisaca Revolution. This was an early uprising against Spanish rule.
Córdoba and Nieto stayed in the Charcas area. They were there at the request of José Fernando de Abascal y Sousa, who was the Viceroy of Peru. While in Charcas, they learned about the May Revolution in Buenos Aires. This revolution marked a big step towards Argentina's independence.
Battles and Capture
After hearing about the May Revolution, Nieto and Córdoba moved their army south. They fought against the rebels in the Battle of Cotagaita. In this battle, they defeated the rebel forces.
However, their success did not last long. On November 7, 1810, Nieto and Córdoba faced a major defeat. This happened at the Battle of Suipacha. After this battle, they were captured by the rebel forces. They were later sentenced to death and executed in Potosí.
