Fernando Miyares facts for kids
Fernando Miyares Pérez y Bernal was an important Spanish leader born in Santiago de Cuba in 1749. He was sometimes known as Fernando Miyares y Gonzáles. He served as a high-ranking official, like a governor, for Spain in its colonies.
Fernando Miyares's Military Role
Fernando Miyares became a top leader in Venezuela on April 29, 1810. He was appointed by the Spanish Council of Regency. This group was in charge of Spain at the time. Miyares took over from the previous leader, Emparán.
Before this, Miyares had been the governor of Maracaibo since 1799. When he got his new job, he quickly started to protect the city of Coro. He defended it from groups sent by the local government in Caracas.
Challenges in Venezuela
In 1812, a naval officer named Juan Domingo de Monteverde arrived in Venezuela. He brought a small group of soldiers. Monteverde was supposed to help people who were against the new independent government. These people lived in small towns near Coro.
However, Monteverde pushed further into the areas controlled by the independent government. He gathered more local people who were unhappy with the new Republic. As Monteverde's forces grew stronger, he started to act on his own.
He refused to follow Miyares's orders. Monteverde declared himself the temporary leader of the areas he had taken back for Spain. The Spanish government, called the Cortes of Cádiz, later agreed with Monteverde's actions. They even split Venezuela into two separate leadership areas for a while.
Later Life and Death
In 1814, Fernando Miyares was offered a similar high-ranking position in Guatemala. But it seems he never took this job. Another person, José de Bustamante y Guerra, was in charge there during those years.
Fernando Miyares died in his hometown of Santiago de Cuba in 1818.
