Overlords in History
Feudal Overlords
In the feudal system, an overlord was at the top of a chain of command. They owned large amounts of land. They would grant parts of this land to mesne lords (middle lords) or vassals. These vassals would then become loyal to the overlord. They would provide soldiers or other services when needed. This system helped to organize society and defense in medieval times.
A famous example is William the Conqueror. After he invaded England in 1066, he became the overlord of the entire country. All land was technically his. He then gave parts of it to his loyal followers. They, in turn, became lords over their own lands.
