Fictional universe of Avatar facts for kids
The 2009 science fiction movie Avatar, from director James Cameron, introduces a whole new universe. In this story, humans travel to a faraway moon called Pandora. Their goal is to mine a very valuable mineral called unobtanium.
Pandora is a beautiful, lush world that is similar to Earth. It is home to a smart, native species of human-like beings called the Na'vi. The moon is also filled with amazing and unique animals and plants.
In the 22nd century, a large company from Earth called the Resources Development Administration (RDA) sends scientists, workers, and soldiers to Pandora. The group of Na'vi they meet lives in a giant tree. This tree happens to be growing on top of a huge amount of unobtanium, which the humans want for energy. This creates the main conflict in the story.

Welcome to Pandora
In the movie, Pandora is located in the Alpha Centauri A star system, which is 4.37 light-years away from our Earth. It is one of many moons that orbit a giant gas planet named Polyphemus.
Pandora's Atmosphere
The air on Pandora is a mix of different gases. It has some gases that are harmful for humans to breathe, like methane and hydrogen sulfide. Because of this, humans must wear special masks called Exo-Packs whenever they are outside.
While the air is dangerous for humans, the Na'vi are perfectly adapted to it. They have special organs that help them get more oxygen from the air. This allows them to be strong and athletic. The unique air on Pandora is one of the reasons why the plants and animals there have grown to be so large.
A World Full of Life
Pandora is filled with a huge variety of life. Many animals have six legs, and there are many kinds of flying creatures with leathery wings. Most of the plants and animals on Pandora have bioluminescence, which means they can glow in the dark, creating a beautiful and magical landscape at night.
One of the most amazing things about Pandora is its "web of life." This is like a giant natural network that connects all living things on the moon, from the smallest plant to the largest creature. The Na'vi and other animals can physically connect to this network. This network acts like a single mind for the whole planet and can even defend Pandora from threats.
The creators of the movie worked with experts to make the animals and plants seem as real as possible. The designers were inspired by things like race cars and real animals to make the creatures of Pandora look sleek, fast, and believable.
The Na'vi People
The Na'vi are the tall, blue-skinned people who live on Pandora. They live in harmony with nature and have deep respect for all living things.
A very special part of Na'vi life is their ability to connect with animals. They can do this by using a long braid of hair that connects to the animal's nervous system. This bond is called "tsaheylu." To become a true warrior, a young Na'vi must bond with and ride a flying creature known as an Ikran.
The Na'vi also use this connection to form a bond with one "life partner," which is similar to getting married. Once this bond is made, it lasts for their entire lives.
The Na'vi worship a goddess named Eywa. They believe Eywa is the spirit of Pandora and is connected to everything on the moon through the planet's "web of life." They can communicate with Eywa by connecting their braids to special trees, like the Tree of Souls.
Humans on Pandora
The story is set in the year 2154. By this time, humans have created very advanced technology, but Earth is facing serious problems. Pollution and the overuse of natural resources have damaged the planet's environment. This is why the RDA company is so eager to mine unobtanium on Pandora.
The RDA is a very powerful company that has the rights to all resources found outside of Earth. They are not allowed to use very powerful weapons, but they have a strong private security force to protect their operations on Pandora.
Advanced Human Technology
By the 22nd century, human technology has made huge leaps. They have built massive spaceships that can travel between stars. They also use amazing technologies like 3D mapping and holograms.
The most important technology in the movie is the Avatar Program. Scientists take DNA from a human and mix it with DNA from a Na'vi. From this, they grow a hybrid body that looks just like a Na'vi but is controlled by a human. A human operator can link their mind to their "Avatar" body and use it to walk around Pandora safely. This allows them to breathe the air and interact with the Na'vi.
Humans have also developed advanced medicine. They have technology that can heal very serious injuries, like helping someone who cannot walk to use their legs again. However, this technology is extremely expensive.
