Field Club is a cool neighborhood in Omaha, Nebraska. It's in the Midtown part of the city. This area is special because it's a historic district. This means it has many old and important homes. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 15, 2000. One famous spot here is the Gerald R. Ford Birthsite and Gardens, where a former U.S. President was born!

A Look Back: How Field Club Began

Field Club started as a suburb in the late 1800s. A suburb is a living area just outside a city. It was on the edge of Omaha back then.

Getting Around with Trolleys

It was easy to get to the city center from Field Club. This was thanks to a new trolley system. Trolleys were like electric buses that ran on tracks. This made Field Club a great place for wealthy people to live.

Green Spaces: Parks and Clubs

Field Club was a popular spot because it was near two big green areas. These were like large parks.

Hanscom Park: Omaha's First Park

To the east was Hanscom Park. This was Omaha's very first city park, created in 1872. It was named after Andrew Jackson Hanscom. He was an important lawyer who helped make Omaha the capital of the Nebraska Territory. He also gave land for the park.

The Omaha Field Club: A Special Name

To the west was the Omaha Field Club. This was Omaha's first country club and golf course. It opened in 1898. The neighborhood is named after this club!

Historic Homes and Recognition

Around the year 1900, many important people in Omaha built their homes here. Famous architects designed these houses. These homes have been kept in great condition for over 100 years.

Becoming a Historic District

In the late 1990s, a local historian named Edward J. Quinn started a project. He wanted to get the neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This register is a list of places important to American history.

The Field Club Homeowners League and the Nebraska State Historical Society supported his work. In 2000, the Field Club Historic District was officially added to the list.

Honoring Edward J. Quinn

Because of his hard work, Edward J. Quinn received special honors. In 2001, the mayor of Omaha, Mike Fahey, asked him to join the City of Omaha Landmarks Heritage Preservation Commission. This group helps protect historic places in the city. In 2007, the Douglas County Historical Society also honored him for his efforts.

The Omaha Quartermaster Depot Historic District is another historic area located just east of Field Club.
