History of Fieldhead Hospital
Building the Hospital
Fieldhead Hospital was built to replace older hospitals in the area. It cost about £2 million to build. Princess Alexandra officially opened the hospital on July 11, 1972.
The hospital was designed with many separate buildings, like small houses. These buildings were called "villas." Each villa was named after a local area. They were made to help different groups of people. This included children, teenagers, adults, and older people.
Expanding Services
In the early 1980s, a special unit called Newton Lodge was built. This unit was for people who needed extra security and mental health care.
After another hospital, Stanley Royd Hospital, closed in 1995, Fieldhead Hospital started offering more types of mental health services.
A new building called the "Unity Centre" opened in September 2017. This modern building cost £17 million to build. It has great areas for therapy and comfortable spaces for patients to relax.
Mental Health Museum
Exploring the Museum
The Mental Health Museum is located at Fieldhead Hospital. It used to be called the Stephen Beaumont Museum of Mental Health.
The museum has many interesting items and displays. These items come from the old Stanley Royd Hospital in Wakefield. You can see old medical tools and photographs. There is also a small model of Stanley Royd Hospital. This model shows how the hospital looked before it closed in 1995.
