Fieldhead Hospital is a special hospital in Wakefield, United Kingdom. It helps people with mental health conditions and learning disabilities. The hospital is managed by the South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.
Hospital History
Fieldhead Hospital was built to replace older hospitals like Oulton Hall. It opened on July 11, 1972. Princess Alexandra officially opened the hospital.
The hospital was designed with several separate buildings, called villas. Each villa was named after a local area. These buildings were made to care for different groups of people. This included children, teenagers, adults, and older adults. It also helped people with severe disabilities.
In the early 1980s, a special secure unit called Newton Lodge was added. This unit was built for patients who needed extra safety and care. After Stanley Royd Hospital closed in 1995, Fieldhead Hospital began offering even more mental health services.
A new building, the "Unity Centre," opened in September 2017. This modern building has great areas for therapy. It also has private bathrooms and much better places for patients to relax.
Mental Health Museum
The Mental Health Museum is located at Fieldhead Hospital. It used to be called the Stephen Beaumont Museum of Mental Health. This museum has many interesting items and displays. These items come from Stanley Royd Hospital, which was also in Wakefield.
The museum shows how mental health care has changed over time. You can see old medical tools and documents. There are also photographs and a small model of Stanley Royd Hospital. The museum helps people learn about the history of mental health care.
