The Story of Filippo Berio
How It All Began
The story of Filippo Berio started a long time ago. A merchant named Filippo Berio first began selling olive oil under his own name in Italy in 1850. He wanted to share the delicious olive oil from his home region of Lucca.
Growing the Business
By 1899, the Filippo Berio brand was becoming well-known. Advertisements from that time called the company "Filippo Berio & Co." They proudly stated that the company was founded in 1856 to export the famous olive oil from Lucca. This shows how important quality and tradition were to the brand from the very beginning.
Dealing with Fake Products
As the brand grew, some people tried to sell fake Filippo Berio products. For example, in 1911, some sellers in New York City were selling olive oil labeled as Filippo Berio, but it wasn't real. It was mostly cottonseed oil with just a tiny bit of olive oil mixed in! This shows how popular the brand was, even back then, that people would try to copy it.
A Family Legacy Continues
In 1919, Filippo Berio's daughter, Albertina, along with Giovanni Silvestrina and Dino Fontana, started a new company called SALOV. Today, SALOV has a big factory in Massarosa, near Lucca, where they produce Filippo Berio products.
Since 2014, a company from China called Bright Food has owned most of SALOV. Even with this change, Filippo Berio olive oil is still sent to over 65 countries around the world. It's even the top-selling brand in the United States and the United Kingdom! In Italy, SALOV sells its products under a different brand name called "Sagra."
Marketing and Fun Campaigns
The Famous Song
You might have heard of Filippo Berio because of its catchy TV commercials! For a long time, their ads used a famous song from an opera called The Barber of Seville by Gioacchino Rossini. The original song has the word "Figaro" repeated many times. In the commercials, they changed the words to "Filippo Berio, Filippo Berio, Filippo Berio Olive Oil!" This made the brand very memorable.
Celebrating Spaghetti Bolognese
In 2024, the Filippo Berio team in the UK did something fun: they launched the UK's first National Spaghetti Bolognese Day! This special day, celebrated on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, was all about enjoying the popular dish, spaghetti bolognese. It was a chance to learn about the history and traditions of this favorite meal. Filippo Berio helped people celebrate one of the UK's most loved dishes.
