The fimbriated moray (Gymnothorax fimbriatus) is a fascinating type of moray eel. People sometimes call it the dark-spotted moray or spot-face moray because of its unique look. It belongs to the family of Muraenidae, which are all known for their long, snake-like bodies.

What Does the Fimbriated Moray Look Like?

The fimbriated moray is a medium-sized eel. It can grow up to about 80 centimeters (31 inches) long. Its body is shaped like a snake, which helps it move easily through the water and hide in tight spaces.

This moray eel has a background color that can be white-cream or light brown. All over its body, you'll see many black spots. These spots are different sizes and shapes. They can even change a bit as the eel grows older. Its head has a pointy snout and is usually greenish-yellow, also covered in black dots. The corners of its mouth are white.

Where Does the Fimbriated Moray Live?

You can find the spot-face moray in the warm, tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region. This huge area stretches from Madagascar in the west all the way to Polynesia in the east. It also lives from southern Japan down to New Caledonia.

These eels prefer to live in safe spots around coral reefs. You can find them on the outer parts of the reefs, on top of them, in calm lagoons, and even in harbors. During the day, they like to hide. They usually stay tucked away in cracks and holes in the reef. They can be found anywhere from 1 meter (3 feet) to 50 meters (164 feet) deep.

What Does the Fimbriated Moray Eat?

The fimbriated moray is a carnivore, which means it eats other animals. It's a night hunter! When the sun goes down, it leaves its hiding spot. It then actively searches for food along the reef.

Its main diet includes small fish and crustaceans. Crustaceans are creatures like crabs and shrimp. The moray uses its excellent sense of smell to find its prey in the dark.
