Finger Lakes State Park is a fun place to visit in Boone County, Missouri. It's close to the city of Columbia. This park covers about 1,128 acres. What makes it special is that it used to be a coal mine! After the mining stopped, the land was fixed up to become a park.

It's one of only two state parks in Missouri where you can ride off-road vehicles. The other park, St. Joe State Park, also has a history connected to mining. Finger Lakes State Park is right next to the Rocky Fork Lakes Conservation Area.

Park History: From Mine to Fun

How Finger Lakes State Park Was Created

From 1964 to 1967, this area was a big coal mine. It was called the Mark Twain Mine, owned by Peabody Coal. They dug up a huge amount of coal, about 1.2 million tons!

When the mining was finished, the land was left with deep pits and piles of dirt. In 1974, Peabody Coal gave this land to the state of Missouri. The state then used money from the government to fix up the area. This project showed how land that had been strip-mined could be turned into a great place for people to have fun.
