Finley is a small, unincorporated community in Dyer County, Tennessee. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a city or town. It is located about 5.5 miles west of Dyersburg. Two main roads, Tennessee State Route 104 and Tennessee State Route 182, pass through Finley. Route 182 connects Finley to Interstate 155 and a place called Lenox to the north.
History of Finley
Finley was first settled in the 1840s. Back then, it was known as Pleasant Hill. The early settlers built their homes on the higher ground just north of where Finley is today. A famous frontiersman, Davy Crockett, used to hunt in this area. He even named the creek that flows through Finley after himself!
The community later changed its name to Finley. It was named after a local businessman and farmer named A. Finley. He moved to the area in 1858. Mr. Finley even had a post office set up right in his own home! The community officially started in 1881.
Today, Finley is an important place for the smaller communities nearby. It serves as a hub for the western part of Dyer County. Finley is home to Finley Elementary School, which has been around since the early days of the village. There are also four churches in the community: Finley Baptist Church, Finley Methodist Church, Finley United Pentecostal Church, and Junction Church of God. These churches often work together on community projects. One big event they help with is the annual Finley Freedom Festival in early July. Finley also has its own post office, and its ZIP code is 38030.
