Acting Career
Getting Started
Fiona Xie's journey into entertainment began when she was just 15 years old. While studying at St. Hilda's Secondary School, a talent scout noticed her. Soon, she started modeling for commercials in Singapore and Hong Kong. In 2001, she joined Mediacorp, Singapore's largest media company, as a full-time actress.
Her first acting role was as a nurse in the TV show Growing Up. Her performance was so good that she was cast in the popular comedy series My Genie. This role made her a star. In 2001, after only a year in the industry, she won the "Best Newcomer" award at the Star Awards.
A Versatile Performer
Xie quickly showed she could do more than just act. She became a talented host for variety shows, speaking both English and Mandarin. She was well-known for co-hosting the long-running show City Beat. She also hosted other shows like Say Cheez, which was about photography, and Coffee Talk and Hawker Woks, where she introduced famous local foods.
In 2004, for a TV drama called The Champion, Xie and three other actresses filmed a memorable scene running down Singapore's famous Orchard Road. This showed her dedication to her roles.
In 2006, Xie played her first villain role in the drama An Enchanted Life. She acted as a spoiled heiress, showing she could play different types of characters. That same year, a local magazine named her one of the most promising young actresses in Singapore.
Movies and More TV Shows
Xie also starred in movies. Her second film was Rule #1, a thriller directed by Kelvin Tong. She acted alongside Hong Kong stars Ekin Cheng and Shawn Yue.
In 2008, she starred in the TV drama Just in Singapore, playing a kind-hearted girl who sells chicken wings and sings at festivals. She also appeared in the comedy series Calefare, where she played a character who dreams of becoming a singer but isn't very good at it.
Taking a Break and Returning to the Screen
In 2009, Xie decided to leave the entertainment industry for personal reasons. She spent several years traveling and living in different cities like Hong Kong, New York, and Tokyo.
After a seven-year break, Xie returned to Singapore in 2016. She filmed the series Left Behind, playing a psychiatrist. She said that the role helped her reflect on her own life experiences. One of the main reasons for her return was to spend more time with her family.
Hollywood and Recent Work
In 2018, Fiona Xie achieved international fame with her role in the Warner Bros. movie Crazy Rich Asians. This was her first Hollywood film, and it introduced her to a global audience.
That same year, she returned to Mandarin-language television in the crime thriller Gifted. She played a powerful and clever businesswoman.
Other Ventures
Besides acting, Fiona Xie has been involved in fashion and art. In 2012, she helped launch a fashion boutique in Shanghai. She has also worked as a producer for a documentary filmmaker and has been involved with an art gallery in Hong Kong.
Xie is also an investor in Treedots, a Singapore-based company that aims to reduce food waste.
Personal Life
In a 2020 interview, Xie shared that she left acting in 2009 to travel with her fiancé at the time. They later separated, and she decided to return to her career and be closer to her family.
