The First Baptist Church in Lexington, Virginia, is a very old and important church building. It was first called the Lexington African Baptist Church. This historic church was built a long time ago, between 1894 and 1896. It is a large building made of brick, sitting on a limestone base. The church is designed in a style called Gothic Revival. This means it looks a bit like the grand churches from the Middle Ages.
The church has a pointed roof at the front. It features beautiful round and pointed stained glass windows. There are also two tall towers at the front corners. The tower on the right side has a belfry, which is where the church bell is kept, and a spire, which is a tall, pointed top. Inside, the main area for services has a curved ceiling, like the inside of a barrel. There is also an upper seating area supported by decorative posts. Downstairs, in the basement, there are rooms for classes and meetings. For many years, the First Baptist Church was a very important place for the African-American community in Lexington.
