The First Baptist Church was an important building in the Gainsboro area of Roanoke, Virginia. It was a Baptist church that served the African-American community. The church was built between 1898 and 1900.
It was a large brick church designed with Romanesque and Gothic styles. The building had a special roof shape and a bell tower at the front. A one-story community hall was added in 1936. The First Baptist Church used this building until 1982, when they moved to a new location. Sadly, the church building was destroyed by fire in April 1995.
Reverend Richard R. Jones was the first minister of the church. He helped plan and build the church from 1882 to 1904. The church was recognized for its history and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. It was later removed from the list in 2001.
