The First Battle of Agua Prieta was an important fight during the Mexican Revolution. It happened in April 1911 in a town called Agua Prieta, in Sonora, Mexico. This battle was between supporters of Francisco I. Madero, who wanted a new leader for Mexico, and the Mexican government's soldiers led by Porfirio Díaz.

What Was the Mexican Revolution?

The Mexican Revolution was a major armed conflict. It lasted for about ten years, from 1910 to 1920. People were unhappy with the long rule of President Porfirio Díaz. They wanted more freedom and a fairer government.

Francisco I. Madero was a key leader. He called for a rebellion against Díaz. Many people joined his cause. These fighters were often called "rebels" or "Constitutionalists."

Why Was This Battle Important?

The First Battle of Agua Prieta was special for a few reasons. It was one of the first times rebels used railroads to surprise their enemies. This helped them move quickly and attack when least expected.

Another big reason was that soldiers from the United States got involved. This was unusual for battles within Mexico. Their involvement changed how the fight played out.

How Did the United States Get Involved?

Agua Prieta is right next to the U.S. border town of Douglas, Arizona. During the battle, some of the Mexican government's soldiers accidentally attacked Douglas. They fired shots across the border.

When U.S. troops in Douglas were attacked, they fired back. This action helped the rebels. It made it harder for the Mexican government's soldiers to fight effectively.

What Happened During the Battle?

Because of the U.S. involvement, the rebels were able to take control of Agua Prieta. This was a big win for them. They held the town for a short time.

However, the Mexican government sent more soldiers. These reinforcements arrived about two weeks later. They fought hard and managed to take Agua Prieta back from the rebels.

What Was the Outcome?

Even though the government recaptured the town, this battle was a turning point. It showed that the rebels were strong and could challenge the government. It also highlighted the complex situation near the U.S. border.

The First Battle of Agua Prieta helped shape the early stages of the Mexican Revolution. It was a step towards the eventual end of Porfirio Díaz's rule.
