First Church of Christ, Scientist, Berkeley, is a historic church building in Berkeley, California. It is also known as the Christian Science Society, Berkeley. You can find it at 2619 Dwight Way, near People's Park. This church has been a meeting place for over 100 years.
History of the Church Building
The beautiful church building was completed in 1910. It was designed by a famous architect named Bernard Ralph Maybeck. He was known for his unique and creative designs.
Maybeck used a mix of styles for the church. The main style is called American Craftsman. This style often uses natural materials like wood and stone. He also added parts that look like Byzantine Revival, Romanesque Revival, and Gothic Revival buildings. Many people think this church is one of Maybeck's best works.
The church's main shape is like a square or a Greek cross. Inside, there are two large crossed beams, called trusses, that hold up the roof. In 1929, a Sunday School addition was built next to the church.
A Special Landmark
Because of its unique design and history, the church was named a National Historic Landmark in 1977. This means it's a very important place in American history. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places in Alameda County, California.
Over the years, groups have worked to keep the church in good condition. In 2005, the Friends of First Church Berkeley received a special grant. This money helped them replace the roof and make the building stronger against earthquakes. Another grant in 2006 helped finish these important updates. Later, in 2009 and 2010, grants helped restore the gardens around the church.
