The building once known as the First Church of Christ, Scientist is a historic place in Mason City, Iowa. It is located at 23 3rd Street, N.W. This special building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. This list includes important historic buildings across the United States. In 2005, it also became a part of the Mason City Downtown Historic District. This means it's one of many important buildings in Mason City's city center.

The church was designed by an architect named Clyde W. Smith from Minneapolis. It was built in 1928. The building is important because it shows a mix of different building styles from the 1920s. This mix of styles is sometimes called "architectural eclecticism."

A Unique Design

The First Church of Christ, Scientist, has parts that look like Romanesque architecture and Gothic Revival architecture. Romanesque buildings often have thick walls and round arches. Gothic Revival buildings often have pointed arches and tall windows. This church combines ideas from both styles.

Breaking from Tradition

The design of this building is special because it was different from many other churches of its time. Christian Scientists, the group who built it, wanted a church that did not have typical religious symbols or statues. Instead, they focused on a modern and advanced design. The building shows very high-quality building methods and standards from the 1920s.

What It Is Today

Today, the building is no longer used as a church. Instead, it houses offices for different businesses and professionals.
