The First Congregational Church is a very old and important church in Stoneham, Massachusetts. It was built in 1840. This church is a great example of Greek Revival style, which looks a bit like ancient Greek temples. It's a famous building right in the middle of Stoneham. The church was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 13, 1984. Today, it is part of the United Church of Christ, and its pastor is Rev. Ken McGarry.

About the Church Building

The First Congregational Church in Stoneham is located on the east side of Main Street. This is also Massachusetts Route 28. It sits just north of the town common, which is across Church Street.

Building Design and Features

The main part of the church is a rectangular building made of wood. It has a pointed roof and a strong brick base. The front of the church faces west. This part is covered with smooth, flat boards. The other sides of the building have overlapping wooden boards called clapboards.

The front of the church has three main sections. These sections are separated by tall, flat columns called Doric pilasters. Each section has a door at ground level with a window right above it. These pilasters hold up a decorative band called an entablature. This band goes all the way around the sides of the building.

Above the entablature, there is a triangular part called a pediment. This pediment has a small triangular window in its center. The church tower stands tall from the roofline near the front. It has a simple square base. Above that is a section with slatted openings, which is where the bells are. Finally, there is an eight-sided spire that points towards the sky. Newer parts of the building have been added to the back.

History of the Congregation

The church group, or congregation, first started in 1729. The building you see today is actually their third church home. The second church building burned down, so this new one was built in 1840.

Important Recognitions

The church was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. This means it's recognized as an important historical site. In 1990, it also became part of the Central Square Historic District. This district includes many important buildings in Stoneham's town center.

Community Activities

The First Congregational Church is a busy place in the community. It is where Boy Scout Troop 513 holds its meetings. The church also runs the First Church Stoneham Food Pantry. This pantry helps people in need by providing food. It is also home to the Purpose School, a private preschool that began in 1943.
