The First Statute of Repeal was an important law, called an Act of Parliament, passed in England in 1553. It was created during the first Parliament of Mary I's time as queen. This law cancelled all the religious rules and changes that had been made when her younger brother, Edward VI, was king. It also undid the rules set by the people who were really in charge during Edward's reign, like Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset, and John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland.

What the Law Did

This law basically said that all the religious laws passed under King Edward VI were no longer valid. This was a big step for Queen Mary I, who wanted to bring England back to the Catholic Church after the Protestant changes made by her brother.

Later Changes to the Law

Years later, in 1559, Queen Elizabeth I became queen. She passed her own law called the Act of Uniformity 1559. This new law cancelled the First Statute of Repeal.

The Act of Uniformity 1559 stated that:

at the death of our late sovereign lord King Edward VI there remained one uniform order of common service and prayer, and of the administration of sacraments, rites, and ceremonies in the Church of England, which was set forth in one book, intituled: The Book of Common Prayer, and Administration of Sacraments [...] the said statute of repeal, and everything therein contained, only concerning the said book, and the service, administration of sacraments, rites, and ceremonies contained or appointed in or by the said book, shall be void and of none effect.

This means that Elizabeth I wanted to bring back the "Book of Common Prayer" and the way religious services were done during Edward VI's time.

When the Law Was Fully Cancelled

Even though Elizabeth I's law made parts of the First Statute of Repeal useless, the entire law was officially cancelled much later. This happened in 1603 by another law called the 1603 Act of Parliament (1 Jas. 1. c. 25).
