The Fish River is a cool river located in the Otago Region of New Zealand. It's like a smaller stream that feeds into a larger one, known as the Makarora River. The Fish River begins its journey high up, east of Mount Burke.

It then flows southeast through the amazing Mount Aspiring National Park. You can find it crossing State Highway 6 at a specific spot: 44° 6.97'S and 169° 20.66'E. Finally, it joins the Makarora River south of Haast Pass.

Discovering the Fish River

The Fish River got its name from a famous explorer named Julius von Haast. He named the river in 1863. Julius von Haast was a German geologist and explorer who did a lot of important work in New Zealand.

Just a few weeks before Haast named it, another adventurer, Charles Cameron, had already explored the river. Cameron was a prospector, someone who searches for valuable minerals like gold. He traveled up the Fish River, likely looking for new discoveries.
