Fish Springs, Tennessee facts for kids
Fish Springs is a small, unincorporated community located in Carter County, Tennessee. It sits on the southern shore of Watauga Lake. You can find Fish Springs along US Route 321 and Tennessee State Route 67, just east of Hampton.
The Story Behind Fish Springs' Name
The name "Fish Springs" was given to this area long before Watauga Lake was created. Early settlers noticed something amazing here! There was a large system of underground caves, and a part of the Watauga River flowed into it through a small opening.
Every fall, fish from the Watauga River would swim into these caves. Then, each spring, the fish would return to the river through the same opening. This opening was called "the Spring." Local people could easily catch many fish as they came out of the Spring. That's how this unique place got its name!
