The Fisher Hill Reservoir and Gatehouse are historic structures that were once a key part of the public water supply for the Greater Boston area. They are located in Brookline, Massachusetts.

The Reservoir's Story

The Fisher Hill Reservoir was built in 1886-1887. It was an early and important part of Boston's plan to expand its water system. The reservoir was located on Fisher Road in Brookline, Massachusetts. Today, this area is known as Fisher Hill Reservoir Park.

The gatehouse is a two-story building. It was likely designed by Arthur Vinal. He also designed another important building, the Chestnut Hill pumping station. The first floor of the gatehouse is made of stone. The second floor is built with brick.

You can see brownstone around the windows. This stone also forms the arches on the first floor. Inside the gatehouse, there were pipes that led to the reservoir. Other pipes went down to Chestnut Hill. There were also special gates. These gates helped control the flow of water to local neighborhoods. The building stopped being used for water services in the 1950s.

A Historic Landmark

The reservoir and its gatehouse were recognized as important historical sites. They were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

In 2013, the town of Brookline bought the property from the state. Since then, the area has been turned into a public park. The old reservoir was filled in. However, the historic gatehouse still stands today. There are also signs in the park. These signs help visitors learn about the property's past use.
