Explore Fisher Lake

Fisher Lake is one of about two dozen clear lakes in the Sylvania Wilderness. This wilderness area is inside the Ottawa National Forest. It is located a few miles west of the town of Watersmeet. Fisher Lake is one of the most remote lakes in the Sylvania Wilderness. Visiting here offers a true wilderness experience.

What Makes Fisher Lake Special?

The shoreline of Fisher Lake is completely undeveloped. This means there are no buildings or roads around it. The lake is surrounded by old, untouched trees. These trees are mainly hemlock, pine, and maple.

The lake is also bordered by many bog habitats. A bog is a type of wetland with very wet, spongy ground. It is home to special plants like the pitcher plant. These plants can even trap insects! The lake covers about 31 acres (0.13 square kilometers). It is also quite deep, reaching up to 39 feet (12 meters) in some spots.

Rules for Visitors

Like all lakes in the Sylvania Wilderness, Fisher Lake has special rules. These rules help protect its wild quality for everyone. They make sure the lake stays clean and natural for many years.

Some of the rules include:

  • No motors are allowed on boats. You can only use canoes, kayaks, or rowboats.
  • Catch-and-release fishing is required for bass. This means you must let the fish go after you catch it.
  • You must use barbless hooks when fishing for bass. Barbless hooks make it easier to release fish without harming them.

Fish in the Lake

Fisher Lake is home to Largemouth bass. These bass are usually small in size. However, they have a very striking dark color. This makes them unique compared to bass found in other places.
