Fishermen's Memorial State Park is a cool place for outdoor fun and camping in Narragansett, Rhode Island. It covers 91 acres on Point Judith. This state park used to be part of an old military base called Fort Nathaniel Greene. The fort was named after Nathaniel Greene, a famous general from Rhode Island during the American Revolutionary War.

A Park with a Past
During World War II, a large defensive base called Fort Greene was built here. It was part of a system of coastal defenses around Narragansett Bay. The fort had huge 16-inch guns that could shoot up to 26 miles out to sea!
After the war, the fort was no longer needed. So, in 1953, the state of Rhode Island started buying the land. They wanted to turn it into a state park.
Honoring Local Fishermen
The park was named Fishermen's Memorial to honor all the fishermen from the Narragansett area. This includes both people who fish for a living and those who fish for fun. In 1970, the old fort officially opened as a campground. Today, a former military fire control tower serves as the park's main office.
Exploring the Park's Areas
The park is split into two main sections. These used to be the west and south parts of Fort Greene.
The Campground Area
The former west part of the fort is now the campground. Here, you can find Battery 109. This was a massive concrete and earth structure built for two 16-inch guns. However, these big guns were never actually put in place.
Near the Ocean
The former south part of the fort is close to Point Judith Light by the ocean. This area includes Battery 211, which was a bunker that supported two 6-inch guns. The Point Judith Fishermen's Memorial is right next to this bunker.
You can even see one of the old 6-inch gun positions on the beach in front of Battery 211. There are paths that lead to the tops of the bunkers for both Battery 109 and Battery 211. From these spots, you can get some really great views!
