Flag of Namibia
The national flag of Namibia

The flag of Namibia was officially adopted on 21 March 1990. This important day was when Namibia gained its independence from South Africa. The flag was designed by Frederick Brownell, who also helped design South Africa's flag.

What the Flag Looks Like

The Namibian flag has a special design. It features a diagonal band that starts from the bottom left corner and goes up to the top right. This band is red and has thin white edges.

The top part of the flag, above the red band, is blue. In this blue section, there is a bright gold sun. This sun has 12 triangular rays, making it look like it's shining brightly.

The bottom part of the flag, below the red band, is green.

What the Colors Mean

Each color and symbol on the flag has a special meaning for the people of Namibia:

  • Red: This color stands for the bravery of the Namibian people and their determination to build a future with equal opportunities for everyone.
  • White: The white stripes represent peace and unity. They show how important it is for all Namibians to live together peacefully.
  • Blue: The blue color symbolizes the sky, the Atlantic Ocean, and the valuable water resources of Namibia, like rain and rivers.
  • Green: Green represents Namibia's natural resources, such as its plants, trees, and rich farmlands.
  • Gold Sun: The golden sun stands for life and energy. Its 12 rays show the different ethnic groups of Namibia, all united under one sun.

How the Flag Was Chosen

After Namibia became independent, there was a competition to design the new national flag. Many people sent in their ideas. The final design was a combination of ideas from different entries, put together by Frederick Brownell. The flag was raised for the first time on Independence Day, 21 March 1990, marking a new beginning for the country.
