The flag of the state of Nebraska is a blue flag shaped like a rectangle. It features a special version of the Nebraska state seal in its center. This design was chosen in 1925. At that time, the Nebraska legislature (which is like the state's law-making group) decided the flag should have the state seal in gold and silver on a blue background.

How the Nebraska Flag Was Created

The special seal you see on the flag was first designed in 1867. Before 1925, this seal sometimes appeared on unofficial state banners, which are like flags but not officially recognized. These early banners sometimes had a yellow background instead of blue.

Over the years, some people tried to change the flag's design, but these attempts were not successful. For example, Bertram Goodhue, who designed the Nebraska State Capitol building, tried to create a new look for the seal. However, in 1925, the Nebraska legislature said no to his new design. Instead, they officially approved the existing state seal to be placed "on a field of national blue" as the state's official banner. The flag's official design was first shown to the public on New Year's Day in 1926 at the Nebraska State Capitol.

The flag was officially called the state flag (not just a banner) in 1963. This means Nebraska was one of the last states to get an official flag.

Why Some People Want a New Nebraska Flag

The Nebraskan flag was once ranked as the second-worst among 72 U.S. and Canadian flags. This ranking was done by the North American Vexillological Association, a group that studies flags. The flag that was ranked as the worst at that time, the flag of Georgia, has since been changed.

In 2002, a committee in the Nebraska Legislature talked about creating a group to suggest new flag designs. However, the flag was not changed. Later, in 2017, a state senator named Burke Harr suggested forming a team to redesign the flag. He pointed out that the flag had flown upside down at the capitol building for 10 days, and no one even noticed! Harr hoped a new design would be ready for the state's 150th anniversary. But the State Senate committee decided not to take action on his idea.
