The Flag of Tanzania
The flag of Tanzania was officially adopted on April 26, 1964. This was the same day that Tanganyika and Zanzibar joined together. They formed the United Republic of Tanzania. The flag combines elements from the flags of both original countries.
What Do the Colors Mean?
Each color on the Tanzanian flag has a special meaning.
- Green stands for the country's rich land. It shows the many farms and natural resources.
- Blue represents the water. This includes the Indian Ocean coast and large lakes like Lake Victoria.
- Black symbolizes the people of Tanzania. It shows their strength and unity.

How the Flag is Designed
The flag has a black diagonal band. This band is outlined with thin yellow stripes. These yellow stripes are called "fimbriation." The black and yellow band divides the flag into two triangles. The top triangle is green. The bottom triangle is blue. This design makes the flag easy to recognize.
