The national flag of the Vatican City is a special symbol. It represents both Vatican City, the smallest independent state in the world, and the Holy See. The Holy See is the central government of the Catholic Church. This important flag was created in 1929. It was made by a direct order from Pope Pius XI.

What Does the Vatican Flag Look Like?
The Vatican flag has two vertical stripes. One stripe is a bright light yellow, and the other is white. These colors are very noticeable.
The Coat of Arms
On the white stripe, you will see the Vatican City's coat of arms. This special symbol shows two crossed keys. One key is gold and the other is silver. They represent the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven, given to Saint Peter. Above the keys is a papal tiara, which is a special crown worn by popes.
A Change in Colors
Did you know the flag's colors were once different? The very first version of the flag had yellow and red stripes. The change to yellow and white happened later.
