The flag of the Marshall Islands is a special symbol for this island nation in the Pacific Ocean. It was officially adopted on May 1, 1979, when the Marshall Islands began to govern themselves. The flag was created by Emlain Kabua, who was the first First Lady of the republic.

What the Flag Looks Like

The flag of the Marshall Islands has a bright blue background. This blue color represents the Pacific Ocean, which surrounds the islands. Across the flag, there are two diagonal stripes. One stripe is orange, and the other is white. These stripes start from the bottom left corner and go up to the top right corner.

The orange stripe stands for bravery and the sunrise. The white stripe represents peace and the moonlight. Together, these stripes also show the equator, which is an imaginary line around the middle of the Earth. The Marshall Islands are located just north of the equator.

In the top left corner of the flag, there is a large white star. This star has 24 points. Four of these points are longer than the others. The 24 points show the 24 administrative districts of the Marshall Islands. The four longer points represent the main island groups: Ratak, Ralik, Enewetak, and Bikini.

Who Designed the Flag?

The flag was designed by Emlain Kabua. She was the wife of the first President of the Marshall Islands, Amata Kabua. As the First Lady, she played an important role in creating this national symbol. Her design was chosen to represent the country's geography, history, and hopes for the future.
