The Flamicell (also spelled Flamisell) is a river in Catalonia, Spain. It flows through the beautiful province of Pallars. This river is about 34 kilometers (21 miles) long. It is a smaller river that eventually joins a bigger one called the Noguera Pallaresa.

The Flamicell is special because its water flow changes a lot. It depends on the time of year and the weather. Sometimes it flows very strongly! This is because it collects water from many mountain lakes, like Lake Gento, which is part of the Cabdella Lakes. In 1937, the river flowed so powerfully that it damaged a power station and sent a huge amount of water towards La Pobla de Segur.

The name Flamicell comes from an old Latin word, flamicellu. This word simply means "small river."

Where the Flamicell Flows

The Flamicell river starts its journey in a place called Cabdella. From there, it flows south. As it travels, it passes by towns like La Pobleta de Bellvei and the village of La Plana de Mont-ros. Along the way, two smaller rivers join the Flamicell, making it wider. A few kilometers later, the river flows past La Pobla de Segur. Finally, it joins the Noguera Pallaresa river, just before the Sant Antoni reservoir.

How the River Makes Electricity

For over 100 years, people have used the Flamicell river to create hydroelectric energy. This means they use the moving water to spin turbines and make electricity. There are four special power stations along the river that do this. You can find them in La Pobla de Segur, Cabdella, La Plana de Mont-ros, and Molinos. These stations help provide clean energy to homes and businesses.

River Health

The Flamicell river is in very good natural condition. Scientists check its health by looking at things like oxygen levels and nitrates. The river has a high oxygen saturation of 77%. This means there is plenty of oxygen dissolved in the water, which is great for fish and other river life. It also has low levels of nitrates, which are chemicals that can sometimes harm rivers if there's too much. These good numbers show that the Flamicell is a healthy and clean river.

Fish in the Flamicell

The main type of fish living in the Flamicell river is the common trout. These trout are quite special! Unlike salmon, most of the trout in this river (about 95%) do not travel all the way to the sea. They prefer to stay in the river. Also, most of these trout (again, about 95%) do not move very far from where they are born. They usually stay within about fifty meters (164 feet) of their home spot. Only a small number (about 5%) travel longer distances, more than 500 meters (1,640 feet).
